Explore What is Central England? A guide to the region
Central England is the broad inland and eastern part of England that lies roughly between London and the North. It covers the East and West Midlands — the counties surrounding Birmingham, Coventry and the Black Country to the west, and Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire to the east — together with the North Sea coast from East Yorkshire down through Lincolnshire and Norfolk. The region has no single official definition, but the term is commonly used to describe this central belt of England stretching from Staffordshire and Shropshire in the west to the coast.
Geographically, central England is characterised by the broad lowland plains of the East Midlands, the industrial heartland around Birmingham and the Black Country, the rolling Peak District in the north, and a long flat coastline on the east. Cities including Birmingham, Nottingham, Derby, Leicester, Lincoln and York all fall within this area — each with a distinct character, from Birmingham’s world-class food and arts scene to Lincoln’s intact medieval cathedral quarter and York’s Viking and Roman heritage.
Explore majestic cathedrals, indulge in cultural festivals, sample local delicacies and take in the rugged beauty of the East Coast’s dramatic coastline. Browse our destination guides below to plan your visit.
